Konami and Starlight Film Team Up for Live-Action "Contra" Film
Tokyo-based video game developer Konami is teaming up with Beijing-based film company Starlight Film to develop a live-action film and TV drama series based on the classic side-scrolling action shooter video game series, Contra. Japan’s WeFmedia and China’s Hanwin Film will also be involved in the production.
Originally released as an arcade game in 1987 and later ported to the Famicom / NES in 1988, Contra has seen numerous re-releases and sequels published on different video game consoles over the years. The press release notes that the most recent iteration of the series, a smart phone game known as Contra: Return, has enjoyed great popularity in China.
Further details about the productions have not yet been released, although the press release does mention a worldwide release is planned. If we can temper our expectations based on previous video game to live-action film adaptations, we can only hope that the results will be ranked among such paragons of modern cinema as Super Mario Bros., Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, and BloodRayne.
