Upcoming "Mahojin Guru Guru" TV Anime is a Reboot, Not a Sequel
Crunchyroll previously reported how Hiroyuki Eto’s fantasy gag manga, Mahojin Guru Guru (aka Magical Guru Guru), was once more being adapted into a TV anime.
Now the official Twitter account for Mahojin Guru Guru has confirmed that the upcoming TV anime adaptation for the series will not be a sequel to the earlier anime adaptations or an adaptation of Mahojin Guru Guru 2, but rather a reboot that starts the story from the very beginning of the original manga.

Translation: “With the regards to the new anime, it is not a sequel to the previous anime series or an anime adaptation of Mahojin Guru Guru 2. Instead, it begins with the 1st chapter of the 1st volume of the manga, starting with the 1st meeting between Nike and Kukuri in Jimina Village.”
The story of Mahojin Guru Guru spoofs the conventions of Japanese RPGs as Nike and Kukuri quest to defeat the villainous Lord Giri.
The original Mahojin Guru Guru manga was serialized from 1992 – 2003 in Square Enix’s Monthly Shōnen Gangan magazine. The sequel manga, Mahojin Guru Guru 2, is currently serialized in Square Enix’s Gangan Online digital manga magazine. Mahojin Guru Guru was previously adapted into a 45 episode TV anime in 1994 – 1995 and a 38 episode sequel series in 2000.
