"Tokyo Ghoul" Live-Action Film’s Lead Actress Announces Retirement
After going missing for one week, 22-year-old actress Fumika Shimizu announced yesterday that she decided to end her career as a professional actress and had been requesting her agency to terminate her contract with them. As reported, she is cast as the main heroine Touka Kirishima in the upcoming live-action film adaptation of Sui Ishida’s dark fantasy manga series Tokyo Ghoul to be released this summer and as the voice of the protagonist Nonoko Kishii in the two-part TV anime The Dragon Dentist to be aired on February 18 and 25.
She stars at least three Japanese films to be released this year, Ankoku Joshi (April 1), Warau Manekineko (April 29), and Tokyo Ghoul (summer). All of the three have already finished their filming, but she is expected to not to join in any promotional activities (press conference, interviews, etc.) for them.
She also confirms that she has been a believer of a Tokyo-based religious group since her childhood and
so were her divorced parents. The group’s spokesperson and lawyer held a press conference in Tokyo
yesterday and distributed her hand-written letter to the press.
In the letter she says, “I have been working in this business for eight years, but my heart can’t accept some
contents in the jobs. I have not been able to live properly, and it has put me into a deep state of depression
everyday. So I want to enter the priesthood.” She admitted that the people around her including her manager
were totally against her decision, however, “I want to believe things that have never been confirmed or seen,
such as God, Buddha, and afterlife, and I want to live my life for God. After I decided, my life has been very
peaceful.” The group has already given her a new religious name.
Meanwhile, her agency does not deny the possibility of a claim for damages against her if she will keep
refusing to do already appointed jobs.
