TBS Seeks Easy Marks for "Kaiji" Variety Game Show Program
Tokyo Broadcasting System is looking for a few desperate debtors (i.e. “contestants”) to take part in a variety-style competition show themed around the seedy underworld of Nobuyuki Fukumoto’s gambling manga, Kaiji. The program is scheduled to air in the tail end of 2017, and contestants can volunteer to compete by going to the official website and using the entry form to submit a picture of themselves, their contact information, why they want the money, and how much they currently owe.
Contestants will compete in a number of challenges that reproduce those faced by Kaiji and company, such as the infamous “Steel Beam Crossing of Despair”. TBS notes that unlike in the Kaiji manga and TV anime, there is no actual risk of life and limb, and no need for the contestants to worry about driving themselves deeper into debt. Instead, one lucky winner will walk away with 2 million yen (about $17,900 US) in prize money as well as whatever funds they earn over the course of the game.
