John Carpenter Loves Sonic Games So Much He Even Digs "Unleashed"
How much do you love Sonic the Hedgehog games? Chances are, even if you’re a pretty big fan, you’re still lagging behind the enthusiasm of legendary director and composer John Carpenter (Halloween, They Live, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, etc.). He doesn’t just love the classics, he even loves some of today’s franchise black sheep… including 2008’s Sonic Unleashed.
Carpenter recently spoke about his Sonic love with the folks at FACT Magazine, waxing nostalgic about how he got hooked on the Hedgehog back in the early ’90s. He says he “loved everything about it. Especially the music,” but he also ran into plenty of frustrations. Naturally, he mentions the water level (Labyrinth Zone) as the chief annoyance, saying, “I’d die every time. And then have to start back. It was so frustrating, but there was something so intensely addicting about that.”
What really makes Carpenter stand out as a diehard Sonic fan, however, is the fact that he kept going with the series despite its ups and downs. “I even like the one where he turns into a werewolf,” he added, putting him on a whole new level of devotion.
And yep, Carpenter also got some time in with this year’s Sonic Mania, and he shows no signs of stopping. Despite finding them difficult to beat, he hopes Sega keeps making Sonic games. That’s probably a safe bet!
