Gintama’s Life-Size Kondō Is Sweet as Honey for Jump Shop Display
Certain Jump Shop stores are celebrating Valentine’s Day with large Gintama-themed displays. The Tokyo Dome City location features large figures of Gin and Sadaharu, while the Yokohama shop is displaying a particularly sweet life-size statue of Kondō. The shop is displaying character’s honey-smeared body appears that the anime’s 65th episode. Jump Shop allows and encourages fans to take pictures with the statues.
The shops often have special promotions to celebrate specific series or holidays. The chain’s official Twitter account unveiled this year’s Valentine’s Day event last week. The Gintama Valentine Fair launched at all 10 Jump Shop locations on Friday, and the event will run until Valentine’s Day, February 14.
Shueisha‘s 10 Jump Shop stores in Japan sell a variety of goods inspired by manga from Shonen Jump magazine.
People who purchase at least 1,000 yen (about US$9) in Gintama items at the stores during the promotion will receive one of 20 full-color illustrated cards (seen in boxes at top of below image). The first wave of cards is available now, and the second wave will debut on January 27. New Gintama merch includes a T-shirt, tote bag, bag charms, and scrunchies. Fans who spend at least 3,000 yen (US$27) will receive a special shopping bag to hold their new swag.
Twitter users who follow @jumpshoptokyo and retweet the Valentine Fair announcement have a chance to win one of five oversized posters (seen at bottom of above image). Fans have until Valentine’s Day to participate, and the lottery results will be announced on February 20.
Shueisha revealed its “Jump CS” project as a new online “characters store” in April. Jump Shop stores also began playing a special theme song by Shueisha‘s exclusive recording artist Takeshi Konomi in April.
